Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined an ambitious four-year strategy aimed at significantly increasing the speed of the blockchain while addressing potential vulnerabilities to quantum computing.
In his recent remarks, Buterin provided further insights into a public roadmap known as βStrawmap,β which has been developed by the Ethereum Foundation’s Protocol team. This visual guide plans to streamline the process of block creation and transaction confirmation.
According to Buterin, the roadmap prioritizes a quickened slot time β the duration required to generate new blocks β currently set at approximately 12 seconds. The objective is to ultimately reduce this timeframe to as little as 2 seconds. He emphasized that achieving faster slot times would enhance the user experience by making the blockchain function more dynamically.
Buterin indicated that the slot time would be incrementally decreased, progressing through a series of stages, such as moving from 12 seconds to 8, then down to 6, 4, and ultimately 2 seconds. Additionally, he highlighted that improvements in peer-to-peer communication among Ethereum nodes would facilitate faster block propagation, thus supporting shorter slots without compromising security.
Another key aspect of the roadmap is the enhancement of finality, which refers to the moment a transaction is confirmed as irreversible. Currently, the finality period is around 16 minutes, but the plan envisions reducing this interval to between 6 and 16 seconds. Buterin intends to simplify the confirmation process, making it not only more efficient but also quantum-resistant.
He explained the intention to decouple slot and finality processes. This strategy, he noted, allows for independent consideration of each aspect, leading to a cleaner and more robust blockchain framework. Buterin described the transformation as a significant undertaking, predicting that the initial wave of changes would involve transitioning to post-quantum cryptographic standards.
Buterin also mentioned that this evolution would lead to quantum-resistant slots being implemented before the finality enhancements. He mentioned that while a quantum computerβs emergence could temporarily jeopardize the finality guarantee, the network would continue to operate effectively.
As a summary of his vision, Buterin expressed optimism for consistent improvements in both slot timing and finality timing throughout the ongoing development process. The changes are expected to unfold over the next four years, with a plan including several forks occurring approximately every six months. The first two forks, Glamsterdam and HegotΓ‘, are already confirmed and anticipated to take place later this year.
This detailed roadmap not only highlights the commitment of the Ethereum Foundation to innovation but also signifies the importance of preparing for future challenges posed by emerging technologies.
