In a significant development for Ethereum, co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined an ambitious four-year plan aimed at enhancing transaction speeds and ensuring quantum resistance within the blockchain framework.
Buterin’s insights, shared during a recent presentation, follow the release of a visual roadmap labeled “Strawmap” by the Ethereum Foundation’s Protocol team. This roadmap offers clear steps to improve Ethereum’s performance, primarily focusing on decreasing the time required for new block production and transaction confirmations.
He emphasized that the plan strategically separates the concepts of slots and finality. Currently, Ethereum’s slot time, which is the interval for producing new blocks, stands at approximately 12 seconds. The proposed roadmap seeks to reduce this to an accelerated pace of 2 seconds, transforming user experience to feel immediate and responsive.
According to Buterin, the reduction in slot time is expected to occur incrementally. He forecasted a decrease following a square-root-of-two pattern, progressing from the current 12 seconds down to 8, 6, 4, and ultimately achieving the target of 2 seconds.
Moreover, enhancements in peer-to-peer network communications are anticipated to contribute significantly to reducing block propagation times. This improvement would facilitate a more efficient sharing of data among nodes, allowing for shorter slot times without compromising security.
A critical aspect of the roadmap is the improvement of transaction finality. Currently, finality takes around 16 minutes, but Buterin has set an ambitious target to decrease this to between 6 to 16 seconds. Achieving this involves simplifying the existing confirmation processes and introducing a more robust system that is also quantum-resistant.
Buterin noted the complexity of these changes, highlighting that they require a re-engineering of how slots and finality operate. Part of this transformation will involve transitioning to post-quantum hash-based signatures, which aim to future-proof Ethereum against potential quantum threats.
Interestingly, this approach will facilitate the development of quantum-resistant slots ahead of achieving full finality protection. Buterin remarked that there exists a feasible path where slots could gain quantum resistance much earlier than finality could, thus ensuring continued functionality even in the advent of quantum computing.
