Vitalik Buterin has announced that Ethereum’s innovative smart accounts, also known as account abstraction, are set to be launched within the next year. This development, part of the upcoming Hegota upgrade, aims to streamline transactions on the Ethereum network.
Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, stated that discussions surrounding account abstraction have been ongoing since early 2016. He expressed enthusiasm about the recent advancement, highlighting that EIP-8141, which consolidates various elements necessary for implementing account abstraction, is ready for deployment.
He noted that after many years of refining these techniques, the possibility of realizing this vision has finally come to fruition. The Hegota upgrade is expected to bring these changes, marking a significant milestone for the Ethereum community.
The essence of the smart accounts is rooted in simplifying transactions through the use of what Buterin described as ‘frame transactions.’ Instead of transactions being singular operations, they will consist of interconnected frames that can refer to each other’s data. This new structure allows for greater flexibility, enabling senders and gas payers to authorize multiple actions efficiently.
Moreover, the introduction of multi-signature smart accounts alongside quantum-resistant wallets indicates a commitment to enhancing security and user experience. The validation frame will ensure that signatures are checked before execution takes place, creating a more robust transaction process.
Another major prospect of these developments is the capacity to pay gas fees with tokens other than Ether (ETH). This will be possible through a mechanism involving a paymaster contract or a specialized decentralized exchange that can facilitate real-time Ether transactions without the need for intermediaries. Buterin emphasized that reducing reliance on intermediaries aligns perfectly with the core ethos of Ethereum, which promotes a decentralized framework.
He also pointed out that this advancement is particularly beneficial for users of privacy protocols, as it allows for the elimination of public broadcasting entities that often complicate user experience on platforms such as Railgun and Tornado Cash.
In addition, Buterin has shared a roadmap for enhancing Ethereum’s quantum resistance, identifying key areas of focus like validator signatures and data storage. He anticipates improvements in transaction slot and finality times as part of the long-term scaling strategy.
