The recent launch of Catchain 2.0 on the TON blockchain marks a significant shift in transaction speed, achieving finality in less than one second. This upgrade, which went live on April 10, 2026, drastically reduces the time it takes to confirm transactions, previously set at approximately ten seconds.

With this upgrade, Pavel Durov announced that the performance of the TON blockchain has improved by tenfold, with the block generation rate increasing six times. Transactions are now nearly instantaneous, allowing users to experience far quicker confirmations. This advancement represents the first milestone in a seven-step initiative dubbed Make TON Great Again (MTONGA), with further enhancements planned, including a reduction of transaction fees by another six times.

At the core of these enhancements lies the new Catchain 2.0 technology, which has entirely overhauled the consensus mechanism. As a result, blocks are now produced every 400 milliseconds compared to the previous interval of approximately 2.5 seconds. This advancement is designed to provide real-time interaction, enabling applications to reflect state changes almost immediately after a block is confirmed.

The official announcement from the TON team illustrates that this upgrade is more than a mere performance boost; it represents a foundational transformation in the capabilities of the network. Payments can now be processed in roughly one second, and trading activities occur without delays, enhancing the user experience within apps, particularly for those integrated with Telegram.

However, not all applications can yet take full advantage of this speed. Apps relying on traditional HTTP polling may still experience delays, as updates will not be immediate. Users might initiate a transaction that gets confirmed in less than a second, yet the user interface might not reflect this until the next polling cycle, which could still take up to ten seconds.

To address this, developers are encouraged to switch to the Streaming API v2, which facilitates quicker transaction status updates. This newer system can significantly reduce latency, offering a smoother interaction experience for users. Some applications, like MyTonWallet and tonscan.org, have already integrated this API, leading to noticeably decreased response times even before the sub-second finality became operational.

Moreover, with the increased number of blocks being produced, indexers will need to adapt their systems as well. Those configured for the older timing will face challenges in keeping pace with the new 400-millisecond intervals. The guidance from TON Core recommends testing on the testnet to ensure that systems are adequately prepared for the mainnet transition.

The integration of TON within Telegram, an application boasting over a billion users, underlines the importance of this technical upgrade. The previous investment initiative of $400 million by the TON Foundation indicates a strong commitment to the network’s future. Now, with the introduction of sub-second confirmation times, the infrastructure is poised for consumer-grade applications that require rapid processing, including quick payments and real-time trading capabilities.

As developers begin to leverage the capabilities offered by Catchain 2.0, those who proactively adopt the new Streaming API will distinguish themselves in terms of speed. With this upgrade forming the first step in Durov’s MTONGA roadmap, the anticipation surrounding how quickly applications will adapt remains high. The underlying technology for real-time transaction processing is now in place, setting a promising stage for the future of TON.
