A lengthy prison term has been handed down to a Texas man who masterminded a substantial cryptocurrency fraud, deceiving nearly 1,000 investors out of $20 million.

Robert Dunlap, a 55-year-old from Houston, received a sentence of 23 years in federal prison after being found guilty of conducting a fraudulent scheme involving a non-existent cryptocurrency known as “Meta-1 Coin.” This fraudulent operation, which lasted from 2018 until 2023, was built on a foundation of deceit, with Dunlap fabricating claims about significant gold reserves and prestigious art collections.

During the trial, it was revealed that Dunlap misled investors by asserting that the Meta-1 Coin was supported by up to $1 billion in fine art, claiming it included works from renowned artists such as Pablo Picasso and Vincent Van Gogh. However, these extravagant claims were entirely fictitious, as the assets he described did not exist.

Furthermore, Dunlap claimed that an accounting firm had verified the existence and value of the gold backing the coin, a statement that also proved to be false. To obscure the truth, he generated fake legal documents that concealed the reality of his operation—namely, that he possessed neither the gold nor the art he boasted about.

Over the course of five years, Dunlap continued to attract new investors with his baseless promises, resulting in many victims losing their entire life savings.

In the Northern District of Illinois, a federal jury found Dunlap guilty of mail fraud, with U.S. Attorney’s Office officials announcing the conviction. The case was a collaborative effort involving the IRS Criminal Investigation and the Chicago Field Office of the FBI, emphasizing the widespread implications of cryptocurrency fraud.

Prosecutors argued that Dunlap displayed no remorse for his actions, which only escalated in severity over time. They sought a sentence that would deter others from engaging in similar fraudulent activities, highlighting the profound impact his actions had on the lives of nearly 1,000 individuals.

In addition to his prison sentence, Judge LaShonda A. Hunt ordered Dunlap to provide full restitution to his victims, underlining the importance of accountability in cases of financial fraud.

IRS Special Agent Adam Jobes elaborated on the human toll of the scam, pointing out that it didn’t merely empty bank accounts; it destroyed years of hard work and financial stability for those affected. U.S. Attorney Andrew S. Boutros echoed the need for a severe sentence to reflect the magnitude of the damage caused.

This case underscores the government’s commitment to combating the rising trend of cryptocurrency fraud, with authorities working diligently to address crimes where digital assets have been manipulated for deceptive purposes. The significant 23-year sentence stands as a stark warning to those considering similar schemes in the future.
