Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, has outlined a comprehensive strategy to enhance the network’s resilience against quantum computing threats. This roadmap encompasses significant changes in several critical areas, which he believes are particularly vulnerable to quantum attacks.
In a recent announcement, Buterin highlighted four primary domains that require urgent attention: validator signatures, data storage protocols, user account security, and the handling of zero-knowledge proofs. These areas of focus come in light of rising concerns regarding the potential impact of quantum computing on blockchain security.
On the topic of validator signatures, Buterin proposed replacing the existing Boneh-Lynn-Shacham (BLS) consensus signatures with a quantum-safe alternative known as “Lean” hash-based signatures. He noted that selecting the appropriate hash function is paramount, as it could remain integral to Ethereum’s infrastructure for an extended period. Buterin emphasized the gravity of this decision by remarking that it might be “Ethereum’s last hash function.”
Additionally, Buterin discussed the current data storage system utilized by Ethereum, which relies on KZG (Kate-Zaverucha-Goldberg) for data validation. He suggested transitioning to STARKs (Zero-Knowledge Scalable Transparent Argument of Knowledge), a technology recognized for its quantum resistance. While he acknowledged that implementing this change is feasible, he pointed out that substantial engineering efforts are necessary.
When addressing user account security, Buterin noted the prevalent use of ECDSA (Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm) signatures. He advocates for an upgrade that would permit various signature schemes, including those that are lattice-based and quantum-resistant. However, he cautioned that these new signatures might require more computational resources and result in increased gas fees.
Moreover, Buterin explained that quantum-resistant proofs are currently costly to execute on-chain. To mitigate this issue, he reiterated the need for protocol-layer recursive signature and proof aggregation. Instead of validating each proof and signature independently, this approach would allow a single validation frame to confirm multiple items simultaneously, thus keeping expenses manageable.
