The Ketman Project, supported by the Ethereum Foundation, has brought to light the presence of 100 North Korean IT workers operating within the cryptocurrency sector under assumed identities. This initiative recently provided critical insights into the infiltration of Web3 companies by these operatives.

On a Thursday, the Ethereum Foundation detailed the results of its ETH Rangers program, which launched in late 2024 with the aim of funding security-related public goods within the blockchain space. This stipend allowed for the creation of the Ketman Project, which focused specifically on tracking down false developers, particularly those linked to North Korea.

During its six-month operation, the Ketman Project successfully identified a hundred IT professionals from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and reached out to approximately 53 different projects to inform them about potentially unwittingly employing these DPRK operatives.

The Ethereum Foundation emphasized that this effort addresses a significant threat to the operational security of its ecosystem. North Korean hackers have increasingly targeted the cryptocurrency industry, resulting in substantial financial losses, with one notorious group being the Lazarus Group.

While the specifics of how the Ketman Project identified these North Korean operatives were not disclosed, its website features numerous articles that outline the various tactics and behavioral patterns used by these individuals. Examples include the reuse of avatars across multiple GitHub profiles, revealing unlinked email addresses during inadvertent screen sharing, and displaying default language settings—such as Russian—that do not match their claimed nationality.

In addition to identifying these operatives, the Ketman Project also created an open-source tool designed to detect suspicious activities on GitHub. Furthermore, they collaborated with the Security Alliance, a nonprofit focused on blockchain, to develop a framework that sets industry standards for recognizing DPRK IT workers.

This initiative by the Ethereum Foundation not only sheds light on the hidden dangers within the crypto sphere but also signifies a crucial step toward enhancing security protocols and protecting the integrity of the blockchain ecosystem.
