Galaxy Digital’s Will Owens highlighted an important aspect of the ongoing discussion around quantum computing and its implications for cryptocurrency. While concerns regarding quantum risks to Bitcoin are valid, Owens pointed out that not all crypto wallets face the same level of vulnerability.

In a recent report, he elaborated that the potential threat arises when quantum computers have the capability to derive private keys from public keys. This could enable malicious actors to impersonate wallet owners and execute unauthorized transactions.

However, most wallets are currently secure, according to Owens. He explained that the risk is primarily present when public keys are exposed on-chain. Therefore, wallets exposed to this risk fall into two categories: those with public keys already visible and those revealing their keys during transactions.

The debate surrounding quantum computing’s threat to cryptocurrencies has persisted within the community, identifying it as a significant challenge on the horizon. Theoretical discussions have suggested that advanced computational power could eventually compromise encryption, endangering user keys, sensitive data, and overall fund security.

While some critics downplay the quantum threat, arguing that the necessary technology may remain decades away, there is a growing consensus on the need for preemptive measures. Owens mentioned that Bitcoin Core developers have not neglected quantum-related proposals. In fact, he observed an increase in meaningful proposal activity since late 2025, countering narratives of stagnation.

Owens emphasized that the ecosystem has a robust array of proposals in various stages of development, addressing quantum vulnerabilities and mitigation strategies. Key contributors are engaged in reviewing and debating these initiatives, highlighting a collaborative effort to tackle the issue.

Owens remarked that the community’s proactive approach ensures that while the quantum threat looms, recognition and preparedness are underway.

Moreover, industry experts, including Bitcoin analyst Willy Woo, have recommended strategies to mitigate quantum risks, such as utilizing SegWit wallets for Bitcoin holdings.

Nevertheless, the governance structure of Bitcoin presents its own set of challenges when implementing any potential solutions. As Owens noted, Bitcoin lacks a centralized authority to enforce software updates, making widespread adoption of new proposals complex.

However, he expressed optimism that the nature of the quantum threat would unify participants across the ecosystem—miners, holders, and exchanges—motivated by a shared financial interest in maintaining the network’s security.

In summary, while the quantum risk is acknowledged as credible and pressing, proactive efforts by developers and industry leaders signal preparedness in facing this emerging challenge.
