In a significant reform, the Algorand Foundation has announced updates to its Algorithm Request for Comments (ARC) process, aimed at enhancing the validation of proposals prior to their approval. The revisions are designed to eliminate early finalizations and ensure that only those with concrete adoption statistics move forward.

Cusma, who has recently taken on the role of ARC maintainer, shared these developments on X, indicating that the changes will address issues related to fragmentation within the ecosystem and emphasize a stronger accountability framework.

A notable introduction is the mandatory Pre-ARC discussion phase, which requires contributors to present a detailed overview of their proposals, including the intended purpose and potential overlap with existing ARCs. This foundational step is intended to help filter out proposals that lack substantial value early in the process.

Furthermore, a longstanding issue has been rectified: ARCs will not attain a ‘Final’ designation unless they are accompanied by measurable adoption metrics. Each proposal will now include a machine-readable adoption tracker, which must reflect active ecosystem engagement before it can be officially finalized.

This new accountability extends to the requirements for a sponsoring entity, which may either be the Algorand Foundation or a member of the broader Algorand community. This addition is aimed at providing an extra layer of responsibility in the ARC approval process.

All reference implementations will now be maintained within a dedicated GitHub organization, ensuring that they remain actively supported. In response to feedback, the Foundation is also rolling out the ARC Kit CLI, a tool aimed at streamlining compliance with formatting guidelines and managing state transitions effectively. In a related development, Algorand Technologies has strengthened its team by transferring five key members to the Algorand Foundation, bolstering its technical capacity. Chris Peikert, recognized for his work in post-quantum security and a professor at the University of Michigan, has assumed the role of Chief Scientific Officer. Alongside him, John Jannotti has been appointed as Senior Vice President of Protocol Engineering, leading the technical team directly.

Additional appointments include Pavel Zbitskiy and another engineer as Principal Protocol Engineers, while John Lee takes on the role of Director of Protocol Infrastructure. These strategic hires are indicative of Algorand’s commitment to ongoing protocol enhancement and long-term viability.
