Following a significant security intervention by the Arbitrum Security Council, an attacker linked to the $292 million KelpDAO breach has initiated a laundering operation involving about 75,700 ETH, valued at approximately $175 million, on the Ethereum network.

In the wake of the council’s decision to freeze 30,766 ETH on Arbitrum One, the hacker has rapidly moved funds on the Ethereum mainnet, indicating a desperate attempt to obscure their activities.

Analysis from EmberCN revealed that smaller transactions of ether (ETH) have been conducted via UmbraCash, a privacy-focused stealth address protocol. This tactic illustrates the hacker’s strategy to complicate the tracking of their movements ahead of potential further asset freezes.

Data from Arkham Intelligence highlights that the hacker’s primary wallet retains a significant amount of ETH, while funds are being funneled through a secondary address associated with UmbraCash.

As the security council made its decision, reactions from the community were varied. Steven Goldfeder, co-founder of Offchain Labs, stepped forward to defend the council’s actions. He explained that the 12-member body, which governs the platform, made their move after securing nine votes.

Goldfeder commented on the intricacies of the governance process, countering claims that the sequencer has the authority to transfer funds. He emphasized that the council acts independently of both Offchain Labs and the Arbitrum Foundation.

Despite his defense, concerns were expressed within the community, with one participant questioning the potential for a compromised council to manipulate on-chain funds. This sentiment underscores the ongoing debate between the necessity for emergency powers and the principle of decentralization.

In a humorous twist, crypto leader Justin Sun weighed in on the governance dialogue, proclaiming the Tron DAO as the epitome of decentralization, which added more fuel to the ongoing discussion around Arbitrum’s governance.

Meanwhile, KelpDAO has publicly thanked the council for its proactive measures and acknowledged SEAL 911 for orchestrating the response to the exploit. The protocol remains committed to its efforts to assist rsETH holders affected by the events of April 18.
