In Poland, an escalating controversy surrounding cryptocurrency is reshaping the political landscape as accusations of foreign involvement and illicit financing come to the forefront. The focus of this mounting tension is the firm Zondacrypto, which has been embroiled in allegations of connections to organized crime and foreign intelligence from Russia. This situation has raised serious questions about the integrity of democratic processes in Poland amid ongoing debates regarding the nation’s alignment with European Union regulations.
During a recent parliamentary session, Donald Tusk alleged that Zondacrypto has provided financial backing to various political figures in Poland. He indicated that the firm’s ties extend to the notorious “Bratva,” a well-known Russian crime syndicate, as well as to Russian intelligence services. Tusk cautioned that such associations could undermine the democratic framework and impede the necessary regulatory oversight of the cryptocurrency industry.
Tusk further underscored the implications of these claims by highlighting Zondacrypto’s sponsorship of a significant political event last year, which featured support for presidential candidate Karol Nawrocki from prominent figures including Kristi Noem. Nawrocki’s election victory was reportedly bolstered by endorsements from Donald Trump, intensifying the scrutiny surrounding his political affiliations.
In response to these accusations, officials from Nawrocki’s office have clarified his position on cryptocurrency regulations. They stated that while he advocates for regulation, he remains opposed to the current proposals put forth by the government. Nawrocki has exercised his veto power on similar legislation twice, citing concerns for consumers and the potential adverse effects on smaller businesses.
The ongoing political standoff has left Poland stagnant in its efforts to join the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets framework, putting local exchanges and wallet providers in a precarious situation without a clear route to EU licensing compliance. As other nations advance their regulatory frameworks, the pressure mounts on Poland’s cryptocurrency sector, leaving industry participants in a state of uncertainty.
Efforts to overturn Nawrocki’s vetoes have so far failed, including a notable vote in December 2025.
