Love & Special Sauce, Garrett Dutton, disclosed that he inadvertently downloaded a fake version of the Ledger wallet app, resulting in the theft of nearly 5.9 BTC, which he had saved for his retirement over the past decade.
During an attempt to set up his Ledger hardware wallet on a new Apple device, Dutton searched for the official Ledger Live app in the App Store. Unfortunately, the app he selected was a deceptive imitation rather than the genuine software. Upon installing the fraudulent app, he was prompted to enter his 24-word seed phrase—the security key to his cryptocurrency holdings. After sharing this sensitive information, the attackers swiftly drained his entire bitcoin savings.

It was confirmed that the theft only impacted his bitcoin assets, leaving other holdings intact. The investigation into the incident revealed that the stolen bitcoin, valued at approximately $424,175 at the time, was sent through a series of transactions to deposit addresses on the Kucoin exchange.
