On April 11, 2026, an alarming incident occurred involving musician G. Love, who reported a significant loss due to a fraudulent app on the Apple App Store. The frontman of G. Love & Special Sauce, Garrett Dutton, disclosed that he inadvertently downloaded a fake version of the Ledger wallet app, resulting in the theft of nearly 5.9 BTC, which he had saved for his retirement over the past decade.

During an attempt to set up his Ledger hardware wallet on a new Apple device, Dutton searched for the official Ledger Live app in the App Store. Unfortunately, the app he selected was a deceptive imitation rather than the genuine software. Upon installing the fraudulent app, he was prompted to enter his 24-word seed phraseβ€”the security key to his cryptocurrency holdings. After sharing this sensitive information, the attackers swiftly drained his entire bitcoin savings.

Dutton expressed his distress on social media, sharing the transaction details and appealing to followers for support. It was confirmed that the theft only impacted his bitcoin assets, leaving other holdings intact. The investigation into the incident revealed that the stolen bitcoin, valued at approximately $424,175 at the time, was sent through a series of transactions to deposit addresses on the Kucoin exchange.

Expert onchain investigator ZachXBT successfully traced the movement of the funds. The publicly available transaction records verified that nearly 5.92 BTC was involved in the fraud, highlighting the risk posed to users who may unknowingly download malicious applications.

The community’s reaction to this event on social media platforms was mixed. While many users offered sympathy and support, others raised skepticism regarding the situation, questioning the security measures of Ledger hardware wallets, which require physical confirmation for transactions. Dutton clarified that he had been socially engineered into entering his seed phrase, emphasizing the method of attack utilized by the scammers.

In his posts, he acknowledged his oversight, admitting that he should have exercised greater caution. He noted the prevalence of such scams and expressed hope that his experience would serve as a warning to others within the cryptocurrency community. The musician’s frustrations were palpable as he called out detractors who doubted his account.

This incident is part of a broader trend targeting users of macOS systems, with reports from cybersecurity firms indicating that malware has been created to replace legitimate Ledger Live applications with counterfeit versions prompting users to input their seed phrases. Ledger has consistently advised users to download software exclusively from their official website, warning against the dangers of using third-party app stores.

Understanding the mechanics of these attacks is vital for users. Typically, a user searches for an app, installs a seemingly legitimate listing, and unwittingly provides their seed phrase, granting criminals full access to their wallet. The integrity of a hardware wallet is compromised once the seed phrase is entered in any non-secure environment.

As of now, the incident remains unreported by major news outlets, with Bitcoin.com News being the first to cover the story. Dutton has expressed gratitude for his health and continues to focus on his music career following recent performances, despite the setback. No legal action has been initiated at this time.
