A shocking incident in Madrid highlights the dangers faced by cryptocurrency investors. A Canadian entrepreneur, known for his significant wealth in digital assets, narrowly escaped a kidnapping attempt late Monday night, thanks to the swift actions of bystanders who alerted the authorities.
The attempted abduction unfolded around 11 p.m. on a bustling street at the intersection of Calle Claudio Coello and Calle Jorge Juan, situated in the prestigious Salamanca district, famous for its upscale dining options and nightlife scene.
After dining at the renowned Lobito de Mar, a restaurant helmed by acclaimed chef Dani GarcΓa, the victim found himself forcibly grabbed by three assailants. The attackers used pepper spray during the ordeal and attempted to shove him into a Ford Transit van.
Fortunately, passersby and residents who witnessed the scene acted promptly, contacting the Polish National Police. The police managed to locate the vehicle a short distance away, on Ronda de Toledo, and apprehended two of the suspects, while one remains at large, reports indicate.
Those arrested, both Serbian men aged 33 and 45, reportedly have no criminal backgrounds. According to investigators, the attackers meticulously planned the kidnapping to retrieve the victim’s cryptocurrency passwords, aiming to access his substantial digital wealth. They also targeted a luxury watch worth β¬100,000 that the Canadian was wearing.
Authorities revealed that the assailants had tracked the businessman from Barcelona to Madrid, where he had arrived to close a cryptocurrency deal. The van used for the abduction bore a fake license plate and was equipped with plastic zip ties and sedative pills, pointing towards a premeditated plan. GPS data from the vehicle suggested that the kidnappers intended to transport the victim to Petrer, a town in Alicante.
Left alone in the van while police engaged the suspects, the victim managed to free himself from the zip ties. He then flagged down a taxi, which took him to La Princesa Hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained during the attack. Investigators later discovered firearms inside the van, amplifying concerns regarding the escalation of violence associated with such crimes.
This attempted kidnapping coincides with an observable rise in assaults targeting cryptocurrency holders across Europe. As of 2026, France has recorded 11 similar attacks, indicating a worrying trend where criminals seek direct access to digital assets instead of traditional banks.
Security specialists are warning that these violent tactics, often termed “wrench attacks,” aim to extract wallet seed phrases or private keys through intimidation. The implication is clear: cryptocurrency entrepreneurs are increasingly vulnerable due to the liquidity and digital nature of their assets.
Law enforcement continues to pursue the remaining suspect and has appealed to the public for any information that could assist in the investigation. Surveillance footage and digital evidence are being examined to uncover whether the plot involved additional conspirators or extended surveillance activities.
