A man in the UK is alleging that his estranged partner pilfered a significant amount of cryptocurrency from him, purportedly utilizing security camera footage to capture essential access codes. This shocking accusation centers around 2,323 Bitcoin, valued at approximately $176 million, which he claims was stolen from his Trezor hardware wallet.
The details of this case emerged during a recent session at the UKβs High Court of Justice, presided over by Justice Cotter. In his findings, Justice Cotter suggested that there is a substantial chance for the claimant, Ping Fai Yuen, to prevail in this legal battle, primarily due to the compelling evidence that has surfaced during the investigation.
Ping accused his estranged wife, Fun Yung Li, along with her sister, of secretly recording him to obtain his cryptocurrency access credentials. The accusations became public after Ping was alerted to the alleged scheme by their daughter. Acting on this tip-off, he installed audio recording devices that he claims captured conversations pertaining to the theft and strategies to discreetly transfer the stolen funds.
According to court documents, no transactions have been made to the cryptocurrency addresses identified in the case since December 21, 2023, despite Pingβs ongoing surveillance of those wallets. Following his report to the authorities, police apprehended Fun and seized various cold wallets and personal items, although she was subsequently released on bail as investigations continued. The authorities later announced that no further action would be taken unless new evidence was presented.
In the wake of the alleged theft, Ping sought a court order to freeze any cryptocurrency assets linked to Fun, effectively requesting either the return of the Bitcoin or its equivalent value in fiat currency. His concerns escalated when he noted that the Bitcoin addresses may have fallen victim to dusting attacksβwhere malicious actors send small amounts of cryptocurrency to track wallet activity and unearth the owners of significant holdings.
A violent incident reportedly occurred in September 2024 involving Ping and Fun, culminating in assault charges against Ping, who later admitted guilt to several counts related to the confrontation.
Justice Cotter, while reviewing the evidence, noted the robust nature of Ping’s case. He remarked on the lack of an alternative explanation from Fun regarding the movement of the Bitcoin, which further strengthened Ping’s position. The judge emphasized the necessity for an expedited trial, citing the security risks associated with the dynamic nature of cryptocurrency values.
This ongoing case not only highlights the complexities of cryptocurrency ownership but also underscores the potential vulnerabilities amidst personal disputes. As the situation unfolds, the implications for both parties involved could reverberate within the broader context of cryptocurrency law and personal security.
