Buterin’s proposal entails a move from the current two-round process of Casper FFG, which necessitates two endorsements from validators for block finalization, to Minimmit’s streamlined one-round protocol. The implication of this change is a drop in formal fault tolerance from 33% to 17%, potentially compromising the system’s robustness. However, Buterin emphasizes that the benefits in terms of improved censorship resistance and quicker recovery from potential attacks may outweigh this drawback.
He articulates a crucial point: while finality reversion poses clear economic drawbacks for attackers, censorship can lead to disarray, forcing users into complex negotiations and political disputes.
