A jury in Los Angeles County has delivered a guilty verdict against Eric Halem, a former officer with the LAPD, for his involvement in a kidnapping and robbery case that left a 17-year-old cryptocurrency enthusiast as a victim. The incident, which took place during a home invasion in late December 2024, saw Halem and three accomplices posing as police officers.
Over the course of a two-week trial in the Superior Court of Los Angeles County, prosecutors laid out a disturbing account of how Halem and his co-defendants gained entry to an apartment in Koreatown. They were said to have used police paraphernalia and an access code obtained from someone connected to the victim’s residence.
Inside the high-rise unit, the group restrained both the teenager, identified as Daniel, and his girlfriend, demanding the hard drive that contained access keys to nearly $350,000 worth of bitcoin. Daniel recounted to the jury the threats made against his life if he did not comply with their demands. Testimony revealed that the assailants were equipped with vests that identified them as law enforcement.
The invasion occurred in the early hours of December 28, 2024, where Daniel’s girlfriend was handcuffed with LAPD-issued restraints. In a harrowing turn of events, Daniel was soon subdued and cuffed as the group insisted on obtaining the hard drive containing the valuable crypto assets.
Halem, who had a lengthy tenure with the LAPD, was operating as a reserve officer at the time of the crime. Evidence introduced during the trial indicated that he was involved in various business ventures, including a luxury car rental service and a project aimed at creating a remote audition app for actors.
Jurors took less than a day to reach their verdict on the charges of kidnapping and robbery. Sentencing is scheduled for March 31, where Halem faces the possibility of a life sentence due to the severity of his actions.
The prosecution emphasized that Halem’s actions represented a grave betrayal of the trust placed in him as a law enforcement officer. In her closing remarks, Deputy District Attorney Jane Brownstone highlighted Halem’s text messages, which suggested that he was monitoring police communications following the robbery.
On the other hand, Halem’s defense attorney, Megan Maitia, cast doubt on the prosecution’s case, suggesting that the investigation suffered from a lack of thoroughness and challenging the characterization of Halem and his co-defendants as organized criminals. She pointed out that their choice of vehicles—registered to Halem’s rental business and easily traceable—contradicted any notion of a well-orchestrated crime.
Halem did not take the stand in his defense, and no witnesses were called to support his side of the case. Meanwhile, his co-defendants await their trials, having maintained their innocence throughout the process. The fallout from this incident highlights the ongoing concerns regarding the intersection of law enforcement and criminal behavior.
