In a recent public announcement, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin unveiled significant modifications planned for the blockchain’s core consensus mechanism, following the Ethereum Foundation’s introduction of a new technical outline referred to as the “strawmap.” This comprehensive strategy aims to optimize layer-1 enhancements throughout the remainder of the decade.
One of the primary objectives highlighted by Buterin includes the ambitious goal of decreasing Ethereum’s slot durations from the current average of 12 seconds to as little as 2 seconds. Concurrently, the finality period could be condensed to between 6 and 16 seconds, utilizing a novel one-round Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT) algorithm called Minimmit.
Buterin explained that the process to achieve these reductions would be gradual and safe, possibly adhering to a formula that reduces time in proportion to the square root of two. Key advancements will rely on peer-to-peer networking improvements through erasure coding, aimed at enhancing block propagation speed. Additionally, architectural modifications are planned to reduce the number of attesters per slot, further optimizing efficiency.
The Ethereum Foundation’s researcher Justin Drake introduced the strawmap as a broad framework for future developments, which comprises plans for seven forks anticipated by 2029. The roadmap focuses on enhancing user experience with faster operations, addressing gigagas throughput, ensuring post-quantum security, and integrating privacy features. Upgrades will be strategically clustered across three main layers: consensus, data, and execution.
Buterin also conveyed that certain fundamental changes, such as adopting quantum-resistant hash-based signatures, are likely to be integrated in a phased approach reminiscent of the “ship of Theseus” concept. This method entails a systematic transition to a more secure and efficient consensus system without abrupt disruptions.
Although the strawmap serves primarily as a coordination tool rather than an official roadmap, it marks a definitive move towards enhancing user experiences, fortifying cryptographic security, and achieving comprehensive formal verification across the network.
